Twice as much English and Maths
Our curriculum backwards plans from A grade at A-level and teaches pupils the knowledge and competencies they need to excel, while developing the skills and attitudes for a happy, fulfilled life. Our curriculum focuses heavily on building strong foundations for future success so that pupils can apply knowledge to all situations. They develop a curiosity about the world and the skills to investigate. It is essential that all children leave school with mastery of English and mathematics. Our first priority is to build a foundation in literacy and numeracy, as this provides a gateway to all other learning. To ensure that pupils will be able to read, write and work with numbers fluently and confidently they receive twice as much English and Maths tuition as at most other schools.
Every Friday, pupils complete project work, tying together their learning for the week, providing essential breadth of curriculum and allowing a focus on skills. Students in Years 3-8 normally complete project work as a form group to strengthen relationships within the form. Friday projects may involve trips which offer a wealth of learning and are an effective means of rewarding hard work. Older pupils will sometimes work with younger groups, or may use Friday project time to complete a work placement or other off-site learning. These extended learning opportunities provide a rich curriculum, stimulating new interests and enhancing children’s learning experiences. We benefit from a range of visiting professionals, artists, writers and musicians.
Sport
We offer a range of sports activities. As well as ensuring participation for all we focus on team and individual performance and competition as part of our commitment to high expectations.
Every Child Will Succeed
Reach Academy Feltham is an inclusive school and our team of dedicated teachers is committed to our pupils’ success. We believe that every child will do well academically at our school. We regularly assess progress and keep track of every pupil. When pupils encounter difficulties or fall behind, we intervene and provide tailored small group provision to aid their learning. Every adult in the school from the Principal to the administrative staff, works tirelessly to ensure that every child can thrive.
Special Educational Needs
We are committed to empowering every pupil to achieve his or her potential. The Academy follows the Government’s “Revised Code of Practice” in identifying, assessing and supporting pupils with special educational needs. Through Individual Education Plans we provide support which is tailored to each pupil’s unique situation. Such support is offered in class, in a small group or through withdrawal classes and delivered by a skilled team of teachers and learning support assistants.
English as an Additional Language
Pupils for whom English is an additional language benefit from our emphasis on the core curriculum. They have extra support until they reach the expected achievement for their age in English. Through careful assessment and small learning groups, our pupils have full access to the learning opportunities provided by the school.
Gifted and Talented
We want our pupils to maximise their potential. We are not content with gifted and talented pupils simply achieving the expected level for their year. We ensure that all pupils are challenged and supported in order to excel. Through careful identification and assessment, we provide suitable challenge and differentiation to extend the learning of all our pupils.
